Here are a few costume ideas that are sure to shiver some timbers:

• Sassy Jack Sparrow Costume – This sassy number comes with a thigh high dress complete with buckles and an attached belt to highlight the waistline. Underneath, a feminine petticoat skirt showcases the coquettish side while the bold black boot covers suggest a lady who may not be a lady in every situation; there’s some naughtiness there. A bandanna completes the image and adds a bit of haughtiness to the naughtiness.

• The Royal Lady Adult Plus Costume – Designed for a plus size lady with lots of pluses to share, it includes a sexy dress with white puffy sleeves and a vest style torso. The teasing bodice is tauntingly fresh with lace that goes from neck to waist. A matching hat jauntily posed atop the lass presents a very alluring package, one that is sure to please.

• Pink and Black Adult Pirate Costume – Yarrrr. The captain will be looking to make the wearer of this adorable costume his first mate. A sweet, off-the-shoulder pink half-shirt proudly shows off your treasure chest of delights in a burst of sauciness that’s sure to bring the captain’s wooden leg to a shiver. A darling black skirt with a laced front from tummy to bodice barely reaches mid-thigh and is sure to catch his one good eye. This hardly prim and proper outfit will accent lovely legs to their maximum exposure. A matching hat with skull and crossbones tops off this scintillating outfit.

However the pirate wench chooses to dress, the pirate style is always an eye-catcher and attention-getter. To really shake up the crow’s nest, bring a parrot! Yarrrr.

Pirate costume and it’s history

In 1492 Europeans discovered America and after that date the Spanish often sailed there. The lands that they visited were known as the Spanish main. From these lands they took treasures from the Aztecs, in a land now known as Mexico. They strapped up their vessels and set sail to Spain. Often they would be attacked on their home back by Pirates.

The Queen favourite was Sir Francis Drake. He worked as an explorer and also a privateer.Drake made it his lifetime quest to steal from the Spanish on the high seas, most particularly when England ans Spain were at war in the 1500s. As payment for his efforts he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

Three famous Spanish galleons were strapped up with treasure from the Spanish main. These were dutifully attacked by Captain Jean Fleury, who captured two and let one escape. A suprising characteristic of Spanish ships was they rose high in the sea therefore making it easier to unload.

In the Caribbean there were many ships with pirates on board looking to rob the Spanish of their treasure. Pirates who made the island of Hispaniola their home, were known as buccaneers. The name buccaneer is from the Spanish for fire on which their meat was cooked. These Buccaneers started their trade of attacking Spanish vessels in the early 1600′s

Perhaps the most famous was Henry Morgan, who raided ports and towns of Spain in the 1660′s and as a result, became very rich. The King of England went on to appoint him Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica.

As we know, these colourful characters of the past gave us traditions and stories which we still celebrate today. The well known and loved pirate costume has adapted with changing fashions into a favorite theme, and movie theaters regularly show the exploits of these old sailors, glamorized in a way to make them heros.

Halloween is almost here again and there will be many fancy dress parties going on. It is the favourite time of year to get dressed up in a strange outfit and to make a fool of yourself. When it comes down to what you are going to wear there are all kinds of possibilities. A lot of people tend to stick to the Halloween theme and go as Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein or The Wolfman. Sticking to the traditional spooky image of Halloween is all well and good, but there are a lot of alternatives to consider as well…

Pirate costumes are becoming very popular for fancy dress parties. They have always featured in the selections of outfits in fancy dress shops but they are now being worn by a lot more partygoers. A lot of this is down to the great commercial success of the Johnny Depp and his films Mr. Depp and his crewmates have managed to make pirate costumes look like incredibly cool things to wear.

Of course, there have been movies with buccaneers; when Disney created its ‘Caribbean’ franchise it had not really come up with anything new. The main reason that they have been so amazingly successful is because they tap into a wonderful type of adventure story that had been largely forgotten about. Cinema has always had its antiheroes in pirate costumes, but there had not been any really good ones for quite a number of years.

When Captain Jack Sparrow made his dazzling appearance across the big screen, he captured us with his wit and charm, and the whole pirate story came back to life. You immediately remembered all the pirate tales you watched as a kid on TV and felt the same excitement.
