pirate costume bandana and beads accessories

Monday, August 24th, 2009

The golden rule, when thinking about any accessories to go with your outfit is to ‘think bad’. You want people to be wary of you. You are a buccaneer and a criminal. Dress in a rugged and ‘ready for trouble’ style. Anyone remembering this when they are choosing which accessories to go with their pirate costumes are almost certainly onto a winner.

Another possibility is a bandanna. Many a swashbuckler has worn one of these over the years and they still look cool today. Maybe you even have an old scarf or piece of material lying around somewhere that could be used.

Beads worn in small plaits or dreadlocks can look really good with pirate costumes. Think about Captain Jack Sparrow in the popular series of adventure films. There are a lot of accessories that you might pick up for next to nothing. Again, use your imagination. What about hanging some old-fashioned looking keys from your belt on a piece of wire or string? Or perhaps you could get hold of an old pocket-watch chain to wear along with your waistcoat? There are all sorts of little touches that can be added to your outfit that will make it look so much more authentic. Even small things such as wearing a couple of leather strips (perhaps old boot laces) on your wrist can make all the difference.

Take a look at shots of pirates from films will give you some good ideas. Spend some time on your computer. It will be rewarding and save you a lot of frustration.

If you are still struggling for anything to go with your outfit then check the sites of some online suppliers. Companies that sell pirate costumes usually tend to have a very good selection of bits and pieces to go with them.

films and pirates fancy dress

When Walt Disney Pictures released their first ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie in 2003 it soon became evident that they were onto a winner.

Since the early days of film when there were such classics as ‘Captain Blood ‘ in 1935 and ‘The Sea Hawk ‘ in 1940 there have been very few films about pirates that are worth any real mention. Only a few examples come to mind such as Roman Polanski’s ‘Pirates’ in 1986 and ‘The Goonies’ which made good use of a pirate-based storyline. Another movie that should also be mentioned, albeit for different reasons is 1995′s ‘Cutthroat Island’. This calamity of a movie ended up costing an unbelievable $100 million dollars at the time. The film went on to recover a mere $11 million dollars. The Guinness Book of World Records describes it as ‘the largest box office loss’ whilst The Washington Post said that ‘Cutthroat Island’s’ lame cliff-hangers are enough to make you a cliff jumper’.

So, as you can see, there was a gap in the movie industry just waiting to be filled with a good old fashioned pirates flick.

Enter Johnny Depp. Unless you are one of the few people to have not watched one of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films then you will more than likely agree when I say that Mr Depp is perfectly cast as Captain Jack Sparrow. It would be incredibly difficult trying to imagine anyone else being able to play the role anywhere near as well as Depp. Who else could be quirky, camp, cool, sexy and funny all at the same time? Out of the many modern actors that we have in Hollywood today it has to be said that Johnny Depp must be one of the most versatile. The range of parts that he has played has been incredibly varied and impressive.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films have each been received very positively by both adults and children alike. They are the equivalent of the hugely successful ‘Indiana Jones’ series with Harrison Ford. They are good family movies, something that is becoming harder to come across these days.

Today ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ has become one of the largest movie franchises of all time. There have been numerous video games based on the films (including an online game that was released by Disney themselves), a special ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ edition of Monopoly and even a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ version of the Battleships game is available. All drive the themes at fancy dress costumes parties.

In interviews, after the release of the first film in the series, ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’, Johnny Depp confessed that he had partly modeled his character on aging rocker Keith Richards. Richards made a cameo appearance in the third film of the series, ‘At World’s End’, as Captain Teague who is actually Captain Jack Sparrow’s father. He was supposed to have made an appearance in ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’ but the writers couldn’t manage to fit him into the story.

Unfortunately, audiences will have a long wait before the next installment of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. The fourth film in the series, ‘The Fountain of Youth’, is scheduled for release in 2012.

Pulling out the fancy dress stops without maxing out

Purim is imminent and the stores are bursting with costumes old and new. Alongside the queen, the pirate and the ballet dancer, there are costumes from the reality TV series “Survivor” and the movie “High School Musical.”

Kfar Hasha’ashuim toy-store chain CEO Arik Gabison says consumers spend NIS 60-70 million annually on Purim costumes and accessories, and the average family spends about NIS 200. But does it have to be that way? Can’t we dress up the kiddies without dressing up as bankers to finance it all?

“Most parents are looking for ways to make their children happy and to fulfill their fantasies without overspending,” says Lior Hever, CEO of the All for a Dollar chain, “and there really is no reason to spend outlandish sums on entire expensive costumes. It really is possible to put together special costumes from a limited variety of inexpensive accessories.”

Until a few years ago, people actually did make children’s Purim costumes at home – from old clothes, some accessories from the parents’ dresser drawers and makeup. In the past few years, however, many people have favored buying ready-made costumes or various accessories and creating costumes from them. Creative parents and children can save money and enjoy the challenge of making a costume at home.

Zehavit Alush, CEO of Yanuka educational programs for children, offers these ideas.

The pirate

Start with tight black pants and an old white shirt. Using a thick black marker, draw a skull and crossbones on the back of the shirt. If artwork is not your forte, download an example from the Internet and copy it.

Attach a small stuffed animal to the child’s shoulder – a parrot or a monkey is best. Tie on a black headscarf and make an eye patch from black fabric and a piece of elastic, or draw an eye patch and the band for the patch on the child’s face, using a black makeup pencil. All you need to buy is a sword.

Price: Simple swords cost between NIS 2.50 and NIS 5 at toy stores.
