Dressing up in a pirate costume

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Halloween is almost here again and there are bound to be plenty of fancy dress parties going on. It is the most popular time of year to get dressed up in some strange outfit and to make a fool of yourself. When it comes down to what you are going to wear there are all kinds of possibilities. A lot of people tend to stick to the Halloween theme and go as Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein or The Wolfman. Sticking to the traditional spooky image of Halloween is all well and good, but there are a lot of alternatives to consider as well…

Pirate costumes are becoming very popular for fancy dress parties. They have always featured in the selections of outfits in fancy dress shops but they are now being worn by a lot more partygoers. A lot of this is down to the enormous success of the Johnny Depp movies. Mr. Depp and his crewmates have managed to make pirate costumes look like incredibly cool things to wear.

Of course, there have always been movies about buccaneers; when Disney created its ‘Caribbean’ franchise it had not really come up with anything new. The main reason that they have been so amazingly successful is because they tap into a wonderful type of adventure story that had been largely forgotten about. Cinema has always had its antiheroes in pirate costumes, but there had not been any really good ones for quite a number of years.

When Captain Jack Sparrow made his dazzling appearance across the big screen, he captured us with his wit and charm, and the whole pirate story came back to life. You immediately remembered all the pirate tales you watched as a kid on TV and felt the same excitement.

Wearing pirate costumes for charity

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

When it comes to charity events there are all sorts of things that you can do to raise money. One of the first factors which has to be considered is where your event is actually going to take place. A popular venue is always in your local pub. Lots of people see this as being the best location as most people have come out for the evening to enjoy themselves and are willing to get involved in anything that is going to be good fun.

Having a themed evening is always a good idea and it is bound to be very enjoyable. People love to be a part of something and if you can come up with an idea that is going to appeal to both young and old, then you are onto a winner. A good place for you to start when you are looking for an idea would be to think about recent films that have been popular with most people.

How about pirate costumes for your charity event? The recent series of movies with Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have been immensely popular with a very varied audience. This could be a great place to start and it would give you a really good theme to work around.

Pirate costumes versus other superheroes

Returning to the theme of Peter Pan there was also the 1991 Steven Speilberg fantasy film, ‘Hook’ with Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts. Indeed, Spielberg had already used the pirates storyline in 1985’s ‘The Goonies’ the great effect.

So, out of the many films (and I have only mentioned a small amount) that have been made around this theme over the years, just who are the public’s favourites? Who is more suited to wearing pirate costumes more than their counterparts? It may not be too much of a surprise to learn that Johnny Depp is one of the most popular choices. The other name that is mentioned more than most is Errol Flynn. Even after all of these years his roles are still incredibly popular with film-lovers.

It may be that Disney came up trumps when it dressed Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in pirate costumes but the story is basically nothing that has not already been done before. ‘The Curse of The Black Pearl’ is a brilliant and highly enjoyable family film as are its sequels. It is important, however, that we don’t forget all of the other great films of its kind that went before it. Many of these are still ‘classics’ as well.
