The pirate costume and its origins

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Today’s great love of the pirate costume derived from the notoriety of the pirates. Pirates loved to attack other ships on the high seas. But many had special jobs to carry out on board their own vessels. Listed below are a few of these tasks.

The captain clearly was in control of his unruly crew. The best way for him to keep his authority was to be far more frightening than anyone of lesser rank. He had to be quite different from the rest of the crew, because life at sea was tough enough without an inexperienced captain making it worse. He was chosen as a head of this rogue’s democracy and would have already gained respect for his leadership and navigation abilities. He would also be level-headed under pressure with crew members in the midst of battles at sea.

The navigator studied the sea charts to guide the ship on its adventures. As such, he was probably the smartest person on board.

Deck scrubbers had to clean up all sorts of mess. That included salty sea water, pirate spit and blood from previous battles.

Halloween costumes for kids

Plastic swords are a cheap buy today and add some authenticity worn with a pirate costume. Have some ‘organized’ sword-fight. If a few children are left alone with plastic weapons without a little supervision then it is only a matter of time before one of them is wounded… Perhaps, to avoid any squabbles, you can have some proper contests for them where they are able to show off their swordsmanship to the fore.

If you have your children’s’ party in the summer then another idea would be to have some themed games in the back garden. With a bit of imagination, you can soon adapt some ordinary children’s activities into something that is more in keeping with pirate costumes. Perhaps you have a sandpit where you can bury some ‘treasure’. The kids will love to dig away hoping to be first to find it, especially if they don’t even know what it is that they are looking for.

With a little thought and planning (and minimal outlay) you can easily create a whole afternoon of fun that everyone will thoroughly enjoy
