Pirate costumes and the pirate film

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

The latest Pirates film “Pirates of the Caribbean” focuses on the elixir of youth, and both the theme park ride as well as the movie and the sale of pirate costumes all benefit from the publicity

Once again Johnny Depp portrays a sly and swaggering as Pirate, his attention seeking attitude is not enough to make this picture a success. It is a long film as Johnny Depp and his adversaries compete to find the magic potion of youth.

These boisterous pirates finally arrive on the island supposed to hold the potion. However due to the length of the film, You’ll have aged somewhat when they arrive.

The scene opens quite energetically as trouble prone Captain Jack Sparrow, finds himself once again imprisoned and working on an escape plan. A fat and powdered King of England his military authorities have him tethered to a chair and ready for questioning. He throws clever insults at his jailers and seems more occupied
is more interested in trying to get hold of a cream cake just out of his reach.

We know he will escape because it’s clear he is going to have the cake. Out hero excite us as he swings from a palace chandelier, runs through the crowded town streets, and bumps into Judi Dench as a lady in a horse drawn carriage.

You would be forgiven for recalling Douglas Fairbanks in his role as Sinbad the Sailer 60 odd years ago.

Unfortunately Sparrow’s latest adventure is not as endearing as it develops. Gore Verbinski directed the initial three films with a feel for pop culture, The new director Rob Marshall has a more pedantic and boring touch.

Sparrow and his entourage others are sent on a search for the fountain of youth which simply consists of ships sailing and of pirates people hacking through the jungle.

The original characters of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly do not make an appearance in this 4th movie.

Wearing pirate costumes for charity

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

When it comes to charity events there are all sorts of things that you can do to raise money. One of the first factors which has to be considered is where your event is actually going to take place. A great venue is your local pub. Many feel this is the best place as they have come out for the night to enjoy themselves and are willing to get involved in anything that is going to be entertaining.

A themed event is usually a good idea and will be very enjoyable. People love to be involved with an acticvity and if you can present an idea that is going to appeal to young and old, then you will succeed. A good place for you to start when you are looking for an idea would be to think about recent films that have been popular with most people.

How about pirate costumes for your charity event? The recent series of movies with Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have been immensely popular with a very varied audience. This could be a great place to start and it would give you a really good theme to work around.

Pirate costumes versus other superheroes

Returning to the theme of Peter Pan there was also the 1991 Steven Speilberg fantasy film, ‘Hook’ with Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts. Indeed, Spielberg had already used the pirates storyline in 1985′s ‘The Goonies’ the great effect.

So, out of the many films (and I have only mentioned a small amount) that have been made around this theme over the years, just who are the public’s favourites? Who is more suited to wearing pirate costumes more than their counterparts? It may not be too much of a surprise to learn that Johnny Depp is one of the most popular choices. The other name that is mentioned more than most is Errol Flynn. Even after all of these years his roles are still incredibly popular with film-lovers.

It may be that Disney came up trumps when it dressed Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in pirate costumes but the story is basically nothing that has not already been done before. ‘The Curse of The Black Pearl’ is a brilliant and highly enjoyable family film as are its sequels. It is important, however, that we don’t forget all of the other great films of its kind that went before it. Many of these are still ‘classics’ as well.
