Creating an aged pirate costume effect

Friday, April 8th, 2011

It does not matter whether you are a follower of Captain Jack Sparrow, the Jolly Roger, booty, parrots, or using a hook for your hand, putting on a pirate costume is exciting on Halloween night or for a special event. Pirates date back to the thirteenth century B . C . and the “sea people” of the Aegean by the Mediterranean sea. They symbolize revolt and anarchy and offer us a chance to celebrate their notoriety through their colourful costumes.
pirate costumes Garments for Pirate Costumes The garments truly must be a key ingredient of one’s outfit. Below are a few of the principles: * Trousers – Pirate trousers are usually dark, though different shades may well work as effectively, according to the remainder of your ensemble.

Snug slacks are very effective for both women and men, but when restricted is not a look it is possible to accomplish, you can even opt for baggy cut-offs. In the event that going the saggy route, take off the bottom of your trousers below the knee. Cut in a zig zag shape so that you can provide your slacks and older feel. * Skirts- For ladies who want to wear a pirate costume but choose to definitely not put on slacks, a skirt can also work too.

Long peasant-style or shorter and attractive skirts can equally fit nicely. Just like buccaneer pants, you really should develop your skirt look a lttle bit aged and tattered. When you begin trimming, you should be sure that you won’t need to dress in the skirt ever again for whatever aside from a dress-up costume. * Shirts – Usually a long-sleeved “blousy” or peasant design top is ideal.

The baggier the more effective and enormous cuffs and/or ruffles perform really good, (even for males). * Vests- Dark or red vests or vests with up and down stripes are incredible. Once again, you ought to create the vest to look a bit tattered and old.

films and pirates fancy dress

When Walt Disney Pictures released their first ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie in 2003 it soon became evident that they were onto a winner.

Since the early days of film when there were such classics as ‘Captain Blood ‘ in 1935 and ‘The Sea Hawk ‘ in 1940 there have been very few films about pirates that are worth any real mention. Only a few examples come to mind such as Roman Polanski’s ‘Pirates’ in 1986 and ‘The Goonies’ which made good use of a pirate-based storyline. Another movie that should also be mentioned, albeit for different reasons is 1995′s ‘Cutthroat Island’. This calamity of a movie ended up costing an unbelievable $100 million dollars at the time. The film went on to recover a mere $11 million dollars. The Guinness Book of World Records describes it as ‘the largest box office loss’ whilst The Washington Post said that ‘Cutthroat Island’s’ lame cliff-hangers are enough to make you a cliff jumper’.

So, as you can see, there was a gap in the movie industry just waiting to be filled with a good old fashioned pirates flick.

Enter Johnny Depp. Unless you are one of the few people to have not watched one of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films then you will more than likely agree when I say that Mr Depp is perfectly cast as Captain Jack Sparrow. It would be incredibly difficult trying to imagine anyone else being able to play the role anywhere near as well as Depp. Who else could be quirky, camp, cool, sexy and funny all at the same time? Out of the many modern actors that we have in Hollywood today it has to be said that Johnny Depp must be one of the most versatile. The range of parts that he has played has been incredibly varied and impressive.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films have each been received very positively by both adults and children alike. They are the equivalent of the hugely successful ‘Indiana Jones’ series with Harrison Ford. They are good family movies, something that is becoming harder to come across these days.

Today ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ has become one of the largest movie franchises of all time. There have been numerous video games based on the films (including an online game that was released by Disney themselves), a special ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ edition of Monopoly and even a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ version of the Battleships game is available. All drive the themes at fancy dress costumes parties.

In interviews, after the release of the first film in the series, ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’, Johnny Depp confessed that he had partly modeled his character on aging rocker Keith Richards. Richards made a cameo appearance in the third film of the series, ‘At World’s End’, as Captain Teague who is actually Captain Jack Sparrow’s father. He was supposed to have made an appearance in ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’ but the writers couldn’t manage to fit him into the story.

Unfortunately, audiences will have a long wait before the next installment of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. The fourth film in the series, ‘The Fountain of Youth’, is scheduled for release in 2012.

Pirate fancy dress costumes

Long John Silver, Captain Hook, Black Sam, Black Bart and Jack Sparrow. The adventure and romance of pirates appeals to nearly everyone. The sad truth is that many pirates ate poorly, and often lived on bananas and limes. Very few actually became fabulously wealthy and many of them died at a young age.

For as long as people have used the oceans as trade routes there have been pirates. The earliest documented instances of piracy date back to the 13th century BC.

And for as long as people have had fancy dress costume parties there have been pirates! (Although it is uncertain as to when the first documented instance was…)

If you are thinking about going to a fancy dress costume party dressed up as a pirate then you might want to consider what items of clothing are most pirate-like.

For a man the obvious possibilities would include- a black and white stripey top, a waistcoat, dark trousers/jeans with boots over the top and an eye patch. You might even go as far as a bandana but a parrot on the shoulder would probably only appeal to the brave. Don’t forget about authentic looking pirate weaponry (obviously not real or you’ll end up walking the plank!). Perhaps you could equip yourself with a plastic sword or musket. Behaviour at the event should be as realistic as possible with regular exclamations of ‘Aaarr!’ and, if it is a chilly evening, the odd ‘Shiver me timbers!’

As a buccaneer a lady can become decidedly wicked and adventurous with her costume! There are a lot of pirate design costumes that are saucy and exciting. Some costumes may even include telescope, eye-patch and dagger! If you are feeling daring then you could opt for dressing as a sexy pirate wench complete with a lace up front halter dress, fishnet stockings and a sash round your middle.

For the meeker lady Renaissance Fairy peasant garb is just as acceptable. A chemise or peasant blouse with full sleeves, a bodice or corset, and under-skirt and accenting over-skirt. If she was a lady pirate, she may also be wearing a frock coat over this costume, but for sure she will also be carrying all traditional weaponry, including a (plastic) bodice dagger!

If you are organising a themed pirate fancy dress costume party then you could also make up some pirate-style games and activities for your guests. How about a treasure-hunting game?

Try drawing a map on a piece of plain paper, stain it with coffee and burn the edges for an authentic looking treasure map.

At the end of the treasure trail you could even have some appropriate booty! How about a treasure chest full of chocolates and goodies, instead of the usual boring old jewellery and sovereigns?

There are all sorts of possibilities for a really good party. Let your imagination go wild.

Whether you are dressing in pirate garb for a fancy dress costume party or you are planning a themed evening with friends you can be sure that it will great fun!
